President Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill: A Disaster for Workers, Migrants, and the People of the World

The International League of Peoples’ Struggle US Country Chapter, ILPS-US, condemns with outrage the recent reconciliation bill passed by Congress and authored by the Trump regime. Outrageously referred to as the “Big Beautiful Bill” by Trump, it is in fact a Monstrously Catastrophic Bill as it aims to immensely cut social services that will deepen the immiseration of the people, load billions of dollars into the pockets of the richest elites, and ramp up spending on border militarization and the US war machine to protect the interests of the US ruling class. The White House states it clearly on their own website: “The One Big Beautiful Bill, Backed by American Industry,” featuring over 1000 endorsing organizations representing the interests of big business, from Lockheed Martin to UPS.

These spending cuts will tear apart Medicaid and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), some of the only ways that poor and working class people in the US have been able to afford food and healthcare. While the bill says that state governments will now be responsible for these services, the tax allocation for states to provide for Medicaid and SNAP funding have been reduced by half which will instead cut health insurance for millions and raise costs for the rest. On top of this, some hospitals have already announced closures in anticipation of the cuts with an increasing number of these more affordable facilities to follow. This act follows the neoliberal policies of privatization that puts huge profits in the pockets of private healthcare moguls and other monopoly capitalists while cutting government spending on much needed social services. Endorsers of this bill include the Council for Affordable Health Coverage and the HSA Coalition, corporate backed organizations pushing for privatized healthcare at the expense of working people.

Previous tax incentives for clean energy have been slashed with this bill, and it also ends funding for nonprofit organizations that lead projects to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions, pollution, and other environmental hazards. We've seen the devastation caused by fossil fueled climate change with the recent floods in Texas and wildfires in Southern California earlier this year, with summer temperatures still on the rise, and how local and federal government neglect only exacerbates how the people and environment are impacted. While US environmental policies have not challenged the capitalist system at the root of the climate and environmental crises, they represent long fought-for reforms by peoples’ movements that the Trump regime knew they had to trample on. The bill justified this move by saying that it was targeting supply chains with ties to a “foreign entity of concern,” hinting at the world’s largest producer of green technology and number one US economic rival, China. It is no surprise that key endorsers of this bill are major oil and gas companies and their representatives, including Chevron, Conoco Philips, and the American Exploration and Production Council.

As this bill cuts the people’s needs and resources, it funnels more of the people’s money towards the repressive war and deportation machine after Trump and his ruling class cronies pocketed the rest to their heart’s content. Through the bill, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is directly gifted $30 billion while $45 billion is allocated for US-Mexico border wall construction and another $45 billion goes towards expanding migrant detention facilities. We've seen how these funds have been splurged to terrorize Brown, Black, and working class communities with deployments of the National Guard and Marines to sow fear in major cities. Essentially, over the next four years this will double the capacity and funding of the US deportation machine and hasten its operations, while making ICE the largest federal repressive agency for the first time in US history.

The bill brings the 2026 US military budget to $1.1 trillion. This includes fighter jets such as those involved in brutal bombing campaigns against Yemen and Iran, and gifted to the genocidal Zionist regime to support the extermination campaign against Palestine. It also includes new base construction, radar stations, and missile silos to be built around the world, especially in the Pacific where the US is gearing up for open war against China. This largest US military budget in history comes when the US is more isolated diplomatically in the world than ever before given its flagrant violations of international law, and is more economically isolated with Trump's bullying tariffs and trade wars, leaving it with few options besides military might to attempt to hold onto its rapidly declining status as number one world imperialist power.

To top it all off, temporary tax cuts for the wealthiest elites from Trump’s 2017 “Tax Cuts and Jobs Act” are made permanent with the Catastrophic Bill. It also opens the door for these same elites to buy up more control over the federal government by raising the government debt ceiling by an additional $5 trillion and allows them to act as loan sharks to the government, with future interest rates racking up and being paid for by the masses through even more public spending cuts and rising taxes on the poor.

The Monstrously Catastrophic Bill that the Trump regime is wielding as a weapon to smash its opposition and plunder the livelihood of the people, comes at a time when the people’s movement for peace and justice is ever rising and strengthening. From migrants defending their families and communities, to workers asserting their power, to peoples’ movements asserting their right to organize, to the peace-loving people challenging the largest military budget in modern history, the ruling class of the US reveals its own insecurity at the people confronting it. As the US imperialist state becomes more aggressive domestically and abroad in attacking the people, it also reveals that it is more and more unstable. Now more than ever, is the time for the people to unite and advance their struggles for a better future. We must use the passage of this Bill as an opportune time to educate people on the disastrous effects it will have on their daily lives, raise their consciousness about the true enemies of the people, the monopoly capitalists who are behind this Bill, and to organize and mobilize the people into united action with all those around the world suffering under US imperialism. ILPS-US joins with the exploited and oppressed masses fighting back against the parasitic policies and state repression of US imperialism as their actions and voices proclaim the power of People Over Profit!
